Deadly: legionella bacteria up close

Thousands of people ranging from plumbers to caravan park managers who work on water systems must now be formally qualified to deal with the deadly Legionella bacteria.

Lomax has launched two special courses to ensure they can gain the necessary BPEC certificate for either course in just one day. One is aimed specifically at mechanical service engineers and the other course is aimed at people who are responsible for carrying out risk assessment on water systems in hospitals, leisure centres and residential accommodation.

The course equips participants to understand among other things, the legislation and guidance documents about the bacteria; what it is and how it is transmitted; its sources; and how to guard against it and clean and disinfect hot and cold water systems.

John Rosenbrier, Marketing Officer, said failure to guard against the bacteria can have the most serious consequences: "This bacteria is a killer and everyone who is responsible for working on water systems must be properly qualified to both control the risk of legionella and if necessary deal with it," he said.
